The Plott is a working hound. He was originally a mountain breed, raised and trained to hunt large game such as bear and boar. Today, he is often used to tree raccoons. He has an incredibly loud bark, and he is not afraid to use it. Not only is he an aggressive, bold, and fearless hunter, he is also an excellent tracker. He has an impressive sense of smell and will wander off following interesting scents, so he must be securely fenced in or on leash when he is outdoors. The Plott is intelligent, alert, and eager to please. He is incredibly athletic and fast, and needs daily exercise. He drools and slobbers.
The Plott is harder to train than most other dog breeds. He learns new commands more slowly than the majority of other breeds. You will need to be extra patient when Training him.
The Plott sheds a fair amount of hair. You'll find hair stuck to your couch, carpets, clothes and everything else in your home.
The short coat of the Plott only requires an occasional brushing. But because he sheds you may find yourself brushing him once or twice a week to remove loose hair. (What you get out with a brush doesn't fall out in your home!)
